Invasion of the Capitol: three American soldiers arrested suspected of having participated in the assault

Three members of the Marine Corps were arrested this week as part of an investigation into their possible involvement in the January 2021 assault on the Capitol. One of them, in particular, posted photos of the attack on Instagram.

Three men, members of the Marine Corps, a branch of the US military, were arrested this week. They are suspected of having participated in the attack on the Washington Capitol on January 6, 2021. Their arrest warrant, published by the courts this week and disseminated by various media, details the different elements that incriminate them.

The investigation into these three men began after the FBI detected photos inside the United States Congress at the time of the attack on the Instagram account of one of them. Caption: “happy to be a part of history.” In a private conversation on Instagram on January 31, 2021, this same soldier also said that he was waiting for “civil war.”

The three “Marines” were also seen on video captured by cameras inside the building. Military.com, which was able to see documents related to the three suspects sent by the Marine Corps, reports that they have “intelligence”-related positions, including at least one with “significant” security clearance.

192 prison sentences

On January 6, 2021, several hundred supporters of Republican President Donald Trump had wreaked havoc and violence on Capitol Hill as elected officials certified his Democratic rival Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election.

More than 950 people have been arrested in the last 24 months, Justice Minister Merrick Garland said in a statement published on January 4. More than a third have already been tried on charges ranging from simple “trespassing” to “sedition,” and 192 have received prison terms, according to a separate statement from the Washington federal prosecutor overseeing this extensive investigation.

However, “our work is not done” and “we remain determined to prosecute all those responsible for the assault on our democracy,” added Merrick Garland.

the investigation continues

The federal police seek in particular to identify 350 people suspected of having committed acts of violence in the Capitol, including 250 against police officers. For now, the prosecution has focused on those who directly participated in this attack, which shocked the entire world, but the Department of Justice is also investigating the responsibility of Donald Trump and his relatives.

Since his declaration of presidential candidacy in 2024, a special prosecutor has been appointed to independently oversee investigations concerning him.
