“She is our good fairy”: in Ukraine, a 68-year-old doctor remains despite the bombings

Dr. Trubachova is one of the last general practitioners in Donbass. In Siversk, despite the shelling, she carries out her care missions seven days a week.

In and around Siversk, in eastern Ukraine, another thousand people have not left their homes. To treat them, there is only one doctor left, who is also one of the last general practitioners in the entire Donbass region.

“I have an oscillation table, an electrocardiogram, an oximeter to measure oxygen saturation. I also have a glucometer for diabetes, an eye tonometer. So I have the essential instruments,” says Dr. Alla Trubachova, who consults seven Days of the week. week and at any time of the day.

“Every day we hear booms”

“My veins are clogged, my calves are swollen and I don’t have any more pills for my diabetes,” explains Lyudmyla, one of his patients. In her closet, Alla Trubachova keeps all the medicines she can. No prescription is needed and all are free in this war-torn region.

“Every day we hear booms.” Even if we get used to it, it always shakes us everywhere, especially at night,” says Lyudmyla.

“If the doctor was not there, it would be really very difficult. She is our good fairy for us. Even if we are not sick, she helps us morally,” he says.

Despite the shelling, Alla Trubachova, 68, has no plans to retire to a safer place. “I can’t leave my patients,” judges the doctor.

Not far from his office, a missile strike recently dug a hole 15 meters in diameter and 5 meters deep. The city of Siversk is also about 30 km from Soledar, which Russian forces claimed to have taken possession of last week.
