The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, announced that she will travel to kyiv on Wednesday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“I will be in kyiv today to meet President Zelensky,” said Ursula von der Leyen, specifying that the meeting is aimed at a “detailed” discussion on the continuation of European aid.

Von der Leyen made the announcement during her State of the European Union (EU) address to the European Parliament and in the presence of Ukraine’s first lady Olena Zelenska.

The trip, stressed the leader of the community executive, aims to negotiate or reinforce the EU’s support for Ukraine in its fight against the Russian invasion, which began on February 24.

Ursula von der Leyen recalled that the EU has already sent “more than 19,000 million euros” of aid to Ukraine, including military material, and will allocate “100 million euros to build schools” destroyed by Moscow forces.

Since the beginning of the war, she said, more than 70 schools have been destroyed or damaged and, quoting Olena Zelenska, the president of the European Commission said that children in Ukraine go to school with two backpacks: one for school and another for emergencies. with water, first aid material and a change of underwear.

“Imagine what it is like to send children to school and not know if they will see each other again at the end of the day,” he told MEPs.
