Russia says it has launched “offensive operations” in the Zaporijia region

The Russian army said on Saturday that its troops had launched an offensive in Ukraine’s Zaporijia region, where fighting has intensified this week, after several months without movement on this front.

In their daily bulletin, Russian troops said they had launched “offensive operations” in the region and “occupied more advantageous lines and positions”.

On Friday, the occupying Russian authorities said there had been a “sharp increase in intensity” of fighting in this region. “In the direction of Zaporijia, the intensity of hostilities has increased sharply,” the head of the regional occupation authority, Vladimir Rogov, told Telegram at the time.

“If you look at the entire front line, there is fighting everywhere,” Rogov told Russia’s Ria Novosti news agency, adding that “this had never happened before.”

The line of contact between the Ukrainian and Russian armies in the Zaporijia region has been stabilized for months and there has been no fighting, unlike the situation in Donetsk in the east and Kherson in the south.

Also on Friday, the Russian army claimed control of the small town of Lobkove, near the Dnieper River, more than 60 kilometers southeast of Zaporijia.
