The Polish prime minister on Sunday called Berlin’s refusal to supply Leopard heavy tanks to Kyiv, which urgently demands them when the Russians are on the offensive, “unacceptable.”
“Germany’s attitude is unacceptable,” denounced Mateusz Morawiecki to the PAP agency.
“Almost a year has passed since the war began. Innocent people are dying every day. Russian bombs are wreaking havoc in Ukrainian cities. Civilian objects are being attacked, women and children are being killed,” he added, lamented.
No agreement from Kyiv allies on heavy tanks
His statements come two days after a meeting of fifty countries on the US Ramstein base in Germany.
Ukraine’s allies announced substantial deliveries of new weapons to Ukraine, but failed to agree on the delivery of heavy tanks, despite repeated requests from Ukraine.
The Polish prime minister said he expected “a clear statement” from Berlin authorizing the shipment of leopards, of which he is a producer, by countries that have them.
Poland pledges 14 Leopard tanks to Ukraine
Poland, which declares that it is ready to deliver 14 Leopards to Kyiv, indicates that it is in talks with about fifteen countries on this issue.
If Berlin refuses to supply Leopards to Kyiv, “we will form a small coalition of countries willing to donate some of their modern equipment, their modern tanks, to a struggling Ukraine,” Mateusz Morawiecki warned.
On Saturday, the three foreign ministers of the Baltic countries had urged Berlin to “now supply Leopard tanks to Ukraine”, invoking “the particular responsibility” of Germany, “the leading European power”.
