Nine people died in the shooting that took place Saturday night in Monterey Park, a city near Los Angeles, police said.
According to the Associated Press, the shooting that took place around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday (6:00 a.m. on Sunday in Lisbon) in an area where hours before hundreds of people had celebrated the Chinese New Year, caused nine fatalities.
Los Angeles Police Sheriff Bob Boese said the shooter was male.
The shooting was caused by a man armed with a machine gun who, when the weapon’s magazine ran out, replaced it with another, the Los Angeles Times reported.
The city of Monterey Park, located about 13 kilometers east of Los Angeles, has about 60,000 residents and a large Asian population.
The owner of a restaurant across the street from where the shooting occurred, Seung Won Choi, told the Los Angeles Times that three people ran into the establishment and asked him to lock the door.
It was also said that there was a gunman with a machine gun and various ammunition. Choi said that he believed the shooting took place at a dance club.
