Arizona Governor Halts Executions, Considers Death Penalty

The governor of the US state of Arizona suspended all executions and opened a process to evaluate protocols for the application of the death penalty.

Katie Hobbs, the first Democrat to hold the position since 2009, created the independent commissioner who will “oversee transparency in death penalty proceedings” in Arizona.

“It is time to face the need for better oversight in this system,” he said.

Arizona currently has 110 death row inmates, with three executions taking place in 2022.

The Death Penalty Information Center, a Washington-based non-governmental organization, reported that 35% of execution attempts last year were “visibly problematic.”
