The number of people killed in the shooting that took place on Saturday at a nightclub in Monterey Park, a town near Los Angeles
Los Angeles Police Capt. Andrew Meyer said today that 10 people were killed at the scene of the shooting, which took place in Monterey Park, in an area where hundreds of people were celebrating Chinese New Year hours earlier.
According to Andrew Meyer, another 10 people were injured and were taken to hospital, their health status varying between “stable and critical”.
Meyer said people were “leaving the scene screaming” when officers arrived on the scene around 10:30 p.m. Saturday (6:30 a.m. Sunday in Lisbon).
The officer did not provide a description of the suspect, the weapon he used or why police did not release information about the shooting for hours while the gunman remained at large.
Meyer added that police were investigating another incident in the nearby town of Alhambra to see if they were related, adding that it was “too early” to know if the suspect knew someone at the dance club or if it was a crime of hatred.
The city of Monterey Park, located about 13 kilometers east of Los Angeles, has about 60,000 residents and a large Asian population.
The owner of a restaurant across the street from where the shooting occurred, Seung Won Choi, told the Los Angeles Times that three people ran into the establishment and asked him to lock the door.
It was also said that there was a gunman with a machine gun and various ammunition. Choi said that he believed the shooting took place at a dance club.
