BFMTV traveled this week to Balakliya, in the Kharkiv region, recently occupied by the Russian army, where the ukrainian flag has been waving again since last week.
“Since the beginning of September, our soldiers have already liberated 6,000 km² of Ukrainian territory,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday. “The liberation of the towns occupied by the Russian invaders continues in the Kharkiv and Donetsk regions,” the Ukrainian army also said on Tuesday.
“They sent a big missile to the school”
In Balakliya, the Ukrainian military showed our team a building where prisoners were allegedly tortured and showed dead bodies, proof they say the Russians executed the residents. However, our on-site journalists were unable to verify the veracity of these claims.
In the neighboring town, a school whose roof was destroyed was attacked by the Russians, according to testimonies from neighbors.
“When the occupants entered the village, they settled in the school and our army tried to evict them,” says Irina, a resident of Verbivka, on our antenna. “When [les Russes] They left and launched a big missile at the school.” For her they did it “out of spite, they didn’t want us to keep such a beautiful school”.
The inhabitants interviewed by BFMTV expressed their joy at being freed from the occupation, at no longer being prisoners of their own city.
The Russian army announced Tuesday “massive attacks” on all fronts in response to the dazzling counteroffensive by Ukrainian troops and the Kremlin accuses Kyiv of abuses in the reconquered areas. Ukrainian authorities charge “up to 200 war crimes a day” to Russian soldiers.
