Hundreds of people, including guests from around the world, gathered at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Jerusalem to celebrate the ordination of Sally Azar, the first Palestinian woman to be ordained in Jordan and the Holy Land.
Sally Ibrahim Azar, born in 1996 and pastor of the Lutheran Church, was ordained in a ceremony presided over by her father, Bishop Sani Azar.
“I was more excited to see other people’s excitement,” Sally Azar told the BBC.
“I hope many girls and women know that this is possible and that other women from other churches will join us. I know it will take a long time, but I think it could be exciting if this changes in Palestine,” she continued .
Sally Azar, who studied theology in Lebanon and Germany, became the first woman to lead a congregation in the Holy Land, although there are others in the region, in Lebanon and Syria.
