Ankara says Sweden no longer has Turkish support to join NATO

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Monday that Sweden will no longer have his country’s support in its NATO bid, after Stockholm authorized an anti-Turkish demonstration for Saturday.

“Sweden cannot wait for our support [na adesão] to NATO. If you do not respect the religious beliefs of the Republic of Turkey or Muslims, you will not receive any support from us”, guaranteed the Turkish president, who put several conditions to approve the entry of Sweden and Finland into the Atlantic Alliance, including measures against the Kurdish movements established in those Nordic countries.

On Friday, the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs had already summoned the Swedish ambassador to Ankara, to protest against the authorization of a demonstration planned by an extremist group in Stockholm, with the aim of burning the Koran in front of the Turkish Embassy in the Swedish capital. . .
