The bird flu virus mutated and became transmissible between mammals

The bird flu virus has mutated on a farm in Galicia, Spain, and has become transmissible between mammals. According to the data of the study that the Spanish newspaper El País is now carrying out, none of the workers of this mink farm were infected.

Farm workers have been wearing face masks since COVID-19 appeared on mink farms in the Netherlands in 2021. Yet this is the nightmare of health authorities: a new flu virus capable of crossing species barriers and become transmissible between humans.

For now it will have been just a warning. The case began to be studied last October, after cases of sudden death among minks on this farm in Galicia and it was discovered that the animals had been infected by wild birds.

Last year bird flu killed more than 50 million birds. Mink are considered dangerous for the virus to mutate because they are susceptible to human and bird flu viruses.

Now, experts fear that these animals may be the ideal reservoir for a dangerous mix of these viruses.
