Ukraine: An association helps female soldiers on the front lines get the right equipment

Materials, uniforms, equipment – nothing seems to have been thought of for women in the Ukrainian army. Every day the Zemlyachki association helps women soldiers.

There are 60,000 in the ranks of the Ukrainian army, and 7,000 every day at the front to mobilize against the Russian army. And many of these soldiers have a problem: they are smaller and thinner, they wear the same uniforms as the men.

“For me, for example, I touched up the pants because they were too long, even if it’s the smallest size,” said Mavka, a nurse, regularly deployed to the front line in Krimina to organize evacuations.

Too often, the sleeves are too long, the size doesn’t fit right, the shoes are too big. “The uniform must fit you perfectly so that it is comfortable, that you can move, that it does not bother you and that it does not fall down. So everything must be your size”, explains the caregiver.

Being “in the best condition”

Seeing these dozens of somewhat lost women, Ksenia had an idea. She founded the Zemlyachki association, raised funds and launched a gigantic challenge: to equip the women of the Ukrainian army for free.

Every day she sends adequate material to the front “so that each woman who is on the front line is in the best conditions,” she explains.

So far more than 4,000 applications have been processed. In particular for body armor plates lighter than those issued by the military.

The association also sends soldiers small packages on which is written “thank you for making victory close. Take care.” Inside is “everything a military woman needs” for about a month: “sanitary napkins, dry shampoo, deodorant, shower gel…”
