kyiv applies sanctions against Orthodox clerics accused of subversion

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, approved on Wednesday the imposition of sanctions against ten representatives of the Orthodox Church and a former deputy for alleged acts of support for the Russian invasion.

The Ukrainian Presidency published this Wednesday on the official website the decree in which it accepts the decision of the National Security and Defense Council, stressing that the application of the measure will be carried out by the secretary of the organization.

According to the Ukrainian news agency UNIAM, the targets of the sanctions include, among others, the vicar of the Holy Dormition Cathedral in kyiv, four bishops and the Archbishop of Rovenkyv and Sverdlovks, and former deputy Vadim Novinski.

The decree was published a day after Zelensky announced sanctions against 22 Russian clerics who allegedly support the war.

“Sanctions are imposed against 22 Russian citizens who, under the pretext of spirituality, support the policy of terror and genocide,” says the head of state.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has seen searches of religious institutions, measures that kyiv describes as “national security.”
