The city of Mohe, in northern China, already close to the border with Russia, reached a record low temperature on Sunday, with thermometers reading -53 degrees Celsius.
This region is already known as China’s North Pole, but this time surpassed anything known in that city as it beat the previously recorded low of -52.3ºC, in 1969, according to the Heilongjiang Meteorological Bureau.
To get a sense of the impact the cold has on Mohe, China’s television channel CCTV broadcast a report showing an egg being opened on a scoop, verifying that it was frozen in seconds.
However, the temperature now recorded in Mohe is not the lowest recorded in the entire Chinese territory, as according to the press, the record was reached in Genhe, also in the north of the territory, where the thermometers reached – 59ºC in 2009 .
Interestingly, on Sunday in Yakutsk, the Russian city next to Mohe, -62.7ºC was reached, the lowest value in the past 20 years. By the way, this location in Russia is even considered the coldest city in the world.
