A sacristan was killed and several people injured, including a priest, in a stab attack Wednesday night at a church in Algeciras, southern Spain, authorities said.
An investigation has been opened for alleged acts of terrorism. This investigation will be carried out by a magistrate of the National Court, a court in charge of terrorism cases, said the prosecutor’s office, without giving further details.
“The attack with a knife” occurred “shortly before 8:00 p.m.” in the church of San Isidro de Algeciras, the Ministry of the Interior has said and not in that of San Lorenzo, as it had initially indicated by mistake.
A priest among the wounded
One person was killed outside the church and another was injured inside the church, the ministry added.
A police source told AFP that the person killed was a sacristan while one of the injured was a priest.
According to this source, the attacker was dressed in a djellaba and “shouted something” at the time of the attack.
Local media, based on testimonies, indicate that the attacker was armed with a machete with which he killed the sexton.
“The facts are analyzed and are the subject of an investigation. It is not possible for the moment to determine the nature of the attack,” said the Ministry of the Interior.
