One person died and four others were injured this Wednesday in attacks on churches in Algeciras, in southern Spain, after being attacked with a knife by a man who has already been arrested, according to Spanish authorities.
The man went to at least two churches in the center of Algeciras and, shouting “Allah”, attacked several people with a weapon similar to a machete, one of whom, a sacristan, having died, according to the Spanish authorities and disseminated reports. . by social networks.
Another of the people attacked, a priest, was seriously injured, according to the same sources.
The attack occurred around 8:00 p.m. local time (7:00 p.m. in Lisbon) and, according to the Spanish Public Ministry, he is being investigated as a “suspected terrorist.”
A priest, quoted by the Spanish newspaper El País, described the attack: “The attacker first went to the parish of San Isidro, where he attacked a person. Then he went to the church in Plaza de la Palma, having attacked a sacristan in the street. In the end, it seemed later, it seemed that he was heading towards the church of the Virgin of Europe, but I don’t know if he got there”.
Spanish bishops lament attacks
The Spanish Episcopal Conference, which represents the country’s bishops, regretted the attack on churches in Algeciras, in which one person died and four were injured.
“I received with pain the news of the events in Algeciras. In these sad moments of suffering, we join the pain of the relatives of the victims and of the diocese,” the president of the Spanish Episcopal Conference, Francisco García Magán, who is also auxiliary bishop of Toledo, wrote in a statement.
The bishop also wished the “speedy recovery of the wounded.”
