A Chinese engineer, Ji Chaoqun, was sentenced this Wednesday to eight years in prison in the United States for having provided Beijing with information on the profiles of American experts with the aim of recruiting them.
He was arrested in September 2018 for providing services with information on the profile of eight people, all of them naturalized Americans and from China or Taiwan, some of whom collaborated with the defense sector in the United States.
Arrested in 2018
He was convicted in September of unlawfully acting as an agent of a foreign government and making false statements after a two-week trial in Chicago.
According to the US Department of Justice, Ji Chaoqun acted at the direction of Xu Yanjun, a Chinese intelligence agent sentenced to 20 years in prison in the US for attempting to steal technologies from US and French aerospace companies.
This agent was convicted in November 2021 of having sought, since 2013, information on behalf of China about several aeronautical companies, including the American General Electric Aviation and the French Safran, who collaborated with GE in the development of an engine.
