“Until death do us part.” Married for 52 years, Pepe and Cándida, a couple from Asturias, Spain, fell victim to an unexpected twist of fate. According to various Spanish media, including ABC, both died last Sunday, just 45 minutes apart.
“romantic” coincidence
At 89 years old, Cándida was the first to leave, in the specialized residence where both had been admitted due to cognitive impairment. It was then 1:30 p.m. For his part, Pepe died less than an hour later, at the Central University Hospital of Asturias (HUCA), where he had been admitted over the weekend due to various health problems. He was 86 years old.
“When we called to report the death, the first thing they asked us was if it was an accident. But in reality it was a curious, even romantic coincidence,” says a niece of the couple, with the Hispanic media.
Cándida Cuervo González and José Antonio García Llana, alias ‘Pepe’, were married in 1978 in the church of San Esteban de Sograndio, in Asturias. Born just 18 kilometers away, they never really left the region and settled in the Teatinos district of Oviedo, where they enjoyed great popularity. It was in this same parish that his funeral was organized.
