Ukraine: For a former French officer, the Allies want above all to avoid a Russian victory

The Europeans can now equip Ukrainian troops with German Leopard tanks, the Americans are about to send in their Abrams tanks. But according to former naval colonel Peer De Jong on the set of BFMTV on Wednesday night, it is less for the allies to hope for a Ukrainian victory than it is to avoid a Russian triumph.

Thanks to the authorization issued by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz on Wednesday before the Bundestag, the Europeans will be able to transport contingents of Leopard heavy tanks to Ukraine. Shall we count a few dozen? A hundred? Further away? In any case, the 31 Abrams tanks promised in the wake of US President Joe Biden will be added to the German armored vehicles.

The aid provided by the West to Ukraine is, in fact, a question of quantity today. Will the resources allocated to deal with Russia be enough? Former colonel of the marine troops and vice president of the Themis Institute, Peer de Jong, raised the issue on the set of BFMTV on Wednesday night. For him, the effort of the allies is not likely to allow a definitive victory for the Ukraine but to prevent the Russians from winning.

United States in “a long distance mode”

“Today, I don’t think we are trying to win Ukraine, it is extremely complicated, on the other hand, Russia must not win,” he said.

He sees in the attitude of the United States the sign of this reservation: “We can clearly see Biden’s speech today. A rather minimalist speech, he was not going to war. (…) I think the United States is more in a mode of long distance”.

Find “a little respite”

“War is a problem of the balance of power and morale. We know that the Ukrainians have morale, but it is very complicated. Ukraine must not be carried away by a Russian offensive, that is the real problem,” continued Peer De Jong.

The official underlined the terrible human weight of the conflict: “This war that has lasted a year, we talk about it as if it were Monopoly. But it is extremely difficult, you have 100,000 dead and wounded on the Ukrainian side, and you have between 120,000 and 150,000 dead on the Russian side. That’s huge.”

“Today’s Ukrainians need a breath of fresh air,” he concluded.
