Toyota reshuffles executive leadership, names new CEO

Toyota Motor announced on Thursday a shake-up of the executive management, which includes the appointment of a new president and CEO, who will be Koji Sato, replacing Akio Toyoda, who becomes chairman of the automaker’s board of directors.

This measure takes effect on April 1, the beginning of Toyota’s 2023 fiscal year, the company explained in a statement.

Toyota will replace Group Chairman of the Board (Chairman) Takeshi Uchiyamada, who becomes a board member.

The construction company plans to hold a press conference soon to discuss the executive reorganization. Koji Sato, 53, has a mechanical engineering degree from Waseda University and joined Toyota Motor in 1992, the same year he graduated.

In 2016, Koji Sato was appointed Chief Engineer of Lexus International and a year later General Manager. In 2019 he assumed the vice presidency.

Since 2020 and currently President of Lexus International and Gazoo Racing, and since 2021 he has held the position of Director of Operations and Brand Director.

When his appointment as Toyota president and chief executive officer takes effect in April, Koji Sato will step down as head of those group subsidiaries but will retain the role of chief operating officer.
