Alleged accomplice of suspected Russian spy arrested in Germany

Germany’s federal prosecutor’s office announced on Thursday the arrest over the weekend of an alleged accomplice of a German intelligence agent accused of spying for Russia, who was arrested just before Christmas.

German citizen Arthur E. “provided information to the Russian secret services,” received from Carsten L., an agent of the German secret intelligence services (BND, for his German acronym), according to a note from the federal prosecutor’s office in Karlsruhe, in the west of the country.

According to the OM, Arthur E., who was arrested on Sunday and was heard by a judge on Monday, did not work for German intelligence services, unlike Carsten L.

The suspect was detained at a Munich airport on his way back to Germany after a trip to the United States, the prosecutor’s office said. “The investigation was carried out in close cooperation with the German secret service (BND) and with the support of the American FBI,” he explains.

The arrest of Carsten L. on December 22 received a lot of media attention in Germany, although authorities have not given many details about what information he was able to provide to Russian intelligence.
