The Swedish Prime Minister, Magdalena Andersson, recognized this Wednesday the defeat of the left and the victory of the bloc formed by the right and the extreme right in the legislative elections, after an almost complete recount of the votes in very tight votes.
Consequently, the Social Democratic leader has announced her resignation, which will be officially presented on Thursday.
The bloc made up of three right-wing parties and the far-right Swedish Democrats (SD) has “a small majority, but it is still a majority,” he told a news conference.
“Therefore, I will ask tomorrow (Thursday) to be relieved of my duties as prime minister and the responsibility for the rest will be entrusted to the speaker of parliament,” he added.
176 seats for the right, 173 for the left
According to near-final results covering more than 99% of polling stations, the far-right/right-wing bloc led by conservative Ulf Kristersson will win 176 seats, compared to 173 for the left-wing bloc led by Magdalena Andersson.
Sunday’s election was so close that it was necessary to wait for a recount of some tens of thousands of missing votes on Wednesday to validate the full results.
Only those from a few offices were still missing Wednesday night around 7:45 p.m. local time.
