Swedish PM announces resignation in recognition of electoral defeat

The Swedish Prime Minister, Magdalena Andersson, recognized on Wednesday the defeat of the left and the victory of the right-wing and far-right bloc in the legislative elections in Sweden held last Sunday, with almost all the votes counted.

Consequently, the Social Democratic leader announced her resignation at a press conference, which will be officially presented on Thursday.

The right-wing three-party bloc and the far-right Swedish Democrats (SD) have “a small majority, but a majority nonetheless,” Magdalena Andersson told a news conference after close scrutiny.

“For this reason, I will ask tomorrow (Thursday) to be relieved of my duties as prime minister and that responsibility will then pass to the president of Parliament,” added the outgoing prime minister.

According to almost definitive results, which affected more than 99% of the ballots, the coalition formed by the right and the extreme right, led by the conservative Ulf Kristersson, will obtain 176 parliamentary seats, compared to 173 for the left-wing bloc led by Magdalena Anderson.

Sunday’s legislative elections were so close that we had to wait for a few tens of thousands of votes to be counted today to validate the final results.

At 7:45 p.m. local time (6:45 p.m. in Lisbon), all that remained was to count the ballots from some polling stations, which were already insufficient to change the result.
