“I’m here to claim my money”: A Lebanese woman robs her bank to treat her sick sister

A 27-year-old woman robbed her own bank on Wednesday to finance her sister’s cancer treatment.

It is a desperate move. Safi Hafiz tried everything for everything this Wednesday in Beirut. This activist, known in the land of Cedar, robbed her bank to recover the money stored in her bank account to pay for the treatment of her sister with cancer.

The 27-year-old woman entered the place armed with a pistol, reports a journalist from Release, present on the scene by chance. Helped by accomplices, she asks for the 20,000 euros in her bank account.

“I’m here to claim my money,” he proclaims amid the general chaos.

“I will do anything to save her”

The employees then panicked and took cover on the ground. The young woman threatens to set herself on fire with gasoline if she does not win her case. In a video uploaded live to social networks, the young Lebanese explained that she was there to “take care of her sister” from her, present a few meters away.

“My bank only gives me barely $200 a month, says Sali. While my sister needs Tecentriq for her cancer which costs several thousand dollars every two weeks, around 50,000. I will do my best to save,” she says.

Sali then manages to withdraw between $12,000 and $13,000 on Wednesday. Since 2019, the Lebanese have been imposed the amount of foreign currency they can withdraw due to the serious economic crisis that the country is going through. The Lebanese currency has lost almost 80% of its value and the minimum wage has dropped to $50 a day.

she’s still on the run

In addition, the State hardly finances more drug treatment, nor care. Many patients have discontinued their treatment due to the high cost of care.

Safi and the few activists present manage to flee about thirty minutes later. The police intervened in his home and arrested several of his accomplices. The young woman is still on the run. In an interview with Lebanese media, she assures that her weapon was fake.

This is not the first such maneuver in the country, the same day another man tried to rob a bank northeast of the capital, without success, according to local media. A few weeks ago, a man also broke into a bank building to pay for his father’s surgery.
