UNITA deputies took office, but the party questions the legitimacy of the government

The president of the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) said Wednesday that opposition deputies will take office on Friday “in order to defend the principles”, but maintains criticism of the legitimacy of the new government.

Speaking of a “self-attributed power of dubious legitimacy” that, when assuming power tomorrow, will lead to a “coup of force”, Adalberto da Costa Júnior, at a press conference in Luanda, explained that he was advised to maintain the challenge through constitutional means.

Listening to militants from all over the country, the conclusion was to “control emotions, pull reason and hope that the regime understands very clearly the meaning of the punishment it has addressed”, adopting reforms.

“We are going to return to all the provinces, from where the delegations left the last four days and spoke with the active forces of civil society, and from that debate came the resolution that we should not be outside the institutions, and that is why the deputies will take office on Friday,” he said.

“From this debate it was clearly verified that the single party in power is the enemy of Angola and its development, and all the democratic and constitutionally provided means must be used to put an end to the single party in power and the coups d’état, which is what just happened in this country,” the UNITA leader added.

“As long as this sad reality continues, UNITA and the partners of the United Patriotic Front, in a joint effort with civil society, will not rest and will take the lead in the defense of the Angolan people”, assured Adalberto da Costa Júnior, “in all spaces for peaceful struggle and resistance, including in the streets, through the exercise of the right to opinion, assembly and demonstration”.

In this sense, the leader of UNITA points out that “the presence of conventional weapons in the streets is not justified” and says that, by opting for this position, “the regime shows that it is afraid of the people” and accuses them of ” violating the role in which the Angolan Armed Forces should be called upon to intervene”.

The presidents of the Social Renewal Party (PRS), the National Liberation Front of Angola (FNLA) and the opposition Humanist Party of Angola (PHA), will participate in the investiture ceremony of the re-elected President of the Republic, João Lourenço, then the general elections on August 24, scheduled for Thursday, party sources confirmed today.

Benedito Daniel, president of the PRS, who in the fifth Angolan elections elected two deputies, told Lusa today that he has already received the invitation and that he will be present at the Praça de República, in Luanda, for the ceremony.

According to the politician, a deputy re-elected for the fifth legislature, the decision to attend João Lourenço’s investiture ceremony was approved at a meeting of his party.

“All because we were not present at the ceremonies [de investidura] It was held in 2012 and 2017 and that is why this time the party leadership decided to be at this 2022 ceremony,” he argued.

The president of the FNLA, Nimi a Simbi, confirmed to Lusa that he will also be present at the inauguration of the President and Vice President of Angola.

“Yes, we received the invitation and we will be in this act, as well as we will be present at the inauguration of the deputies [marcada para sexta-feira] in the National Assembly,” he stressed.

Nimi a Simbi said that he is going to the Angolan parliament to participate in the welcome process and start of the deputies of the fifth legislature, a kind of internal registry, which covers the 220 elected deputies.

The leader of the FNLA, who elected two deputies to the new legislature, also said that his party is distancing itself from the demonstrations and that it will not enter the “wave of challenging the electoral results”, since it does not have the summary record. available to compare the results.

“As you know, the complaint of our list delegates persists, some of our offices have already been vandalized, and they, while they have not received their payments, do not want to deliver the minutes to us, the rest is for history.” , he is hot.

A PHA source told Lusa that its president, Bela Malaquias, will also attend the inauguration of the Angolan president.

According to the final count of the general elections on August 24, the Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola (MPLA) and its candidate, the outgoing President, João Lourenço, won with 51.17% of the vote, followed by UNITA, with 43.95%. .

With these results, the MPLA elected 124 deputies and UNITA 90 deputies, almost twice as many as in the 2017 elections.

The PRS won two seats in parliament with 1.14% of the vote, the same number of deputies that the FNLA and the PHA won, with 1.06% and 1.02% of the vote, respectively.
