At least three dead and 800 injured in Iran earthquake

The number of people injured in last night’s earthquake that hit northern Iran near the city of Khoy has already reached 800, nearly double the initial estimates, and the number of recorded deaths remains at three, according to local authorities.

The first information from the Seismological Center of Iran, released this morning by the Iranian media, indicated that the earthquake measuring 5.9 on the Richter scale near the border with Turkey caused 447 injuries in addition to three deaths, information now updated . a report from the governor of the province, Mohamed Sadegh Motamedian.

This latest count also highlights the material damage caused by the earthquake, both in the locality and the surrounding area, with at least 70 towns affected, 26 of which require special assessment by the Crisis Management Coordination, according to the official agency for country news, IRNA.

For its part, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement announced the start of a relief operation whose first shipment consists of 1,400 food packages and 300 aid tents, in addition to the presence of 11 rescuers and volunteers to help the affected population.

The earthquake was recorded at a depth of seven kilometers, according to the Iranian Seismological Center in Tehran.

The earthquake was felt in many regions of West Azarbaijan province, including Tabriz and neighboring East Azarbaijan province, as reported by Iran’s agency IRNA.

The city of Khoy is close to the border with Turkey, which is why IRNA reported that the earthquake could have been felt in this country in addition to Iraq, Armenia and the Republic of Azerbaijan.
