Storm in Madagascar leaves at least 25 dead

At least 25 people died, 21 are missing and there are more than 38,000 displaced people in Madagascar, as a result of the tropical storm that hit the island ten days ago, according to an official balance prepared this Sunday.

The balance is from the Risk and Disaster Management Department and increases the number of fatalities referred to in the previous balance, which was 22.

The government body also indicates that a total of 83,181 people were affected by the bad weather that hit this island in the Indian Ocean.

The tropical storm on January 19, nicknamed Cheneso, caused flooding and cut roads leading to the capital, Antananarivo.

It temporarily reached tropical cyclone characteristics, with winds of 118 to 166 kilometers per hour, then decreasing in intensity upon reaching the island.

In southern Africa, the cyclone season runs from November to April and Madagascar regularly suffers devastating consequences.

In February 2022, at least 120 people were killed in the country by the impact of Tropical Cyclone Batsirai.

Countries in Africa, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent (IFRC) recently noted, are responsible for just 4% of global carbon emissions, but are disproportionately affected by the climate crisis and environmental degradation.
