6.1-magnitude earthquake strikes northwestern China

China registered an earthquake measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale in China’s far west Xinjiang autonomous region, the country’s Seismic Network Center said on Monday.

The earthquake occurred on Sunday at 07:49 (23:49 on Saturday in Lisbon) in the town of Shayar, 50 kilometers deep.

Shayar is just over 600 kilometers from the region’s capital, Urumqi, and about 300 kilometers from China’s borders with Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

So far no damage or fatalities have been reported from the quake which, despite occurring in an “uninhabited” area, was felt in neighboring cities and rural areas, according to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua.

The state press asked the inhabitants of the area to be careful, in the face of possible aftershocks that could occur in the next few hours.
