China recorded a magnitude 6.1 earthquake in the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, in China’s far west, the country’s Center for Seismic Networks said Monday.
The earthquake occurred on Sunday at 07:49 (23:49 on Saturday in Lisbon) in the village of Shayar, 50 kilometers deep.
Shayar is just over 600 kilometers from the region’s capital, Urumqi, and about 300 kilometers from China’s borders with Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.
According to the official Chinese news agency Xinhua, no damage or fatalities have been reported so far from the quake which, despite taking place in an “uninhabited” area, was felt in neighboring towns and rural areas.
The state press called on residents of the area to exercise caution in view of possible aftershocks that could occur in the coming hours.
