US Secretary of State urges Palestinians and Israelis to calm down

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken this Monday called for calm between Israelis and Palestinians and a de-escalation of tensions in statements in the Egyptian capital ahead of a trip to Jerusalem and Ramallah.

In the context of violence being recorded in the city of Jerusalem and in the Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories, Blinken asked for tensions to be eased.

The US Secretary of State’s statements were made in the presence of his counterpart, Sameh Choukri, and Egypt’s head of state, Abdel Fattah al-Sissi.

The Israeli army shot dead a young Palestinian on Monday in the city of Hebron, in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian health ministry announced. With today’s action, the number of Palestinians killed by Israeli forces since the beginning of the year rises to 35.

The 26-year-old man who was killed has been identified as Nasim Nayef Salman Abu Fouda.

According to the official Palestinian news agency Wafa, Abu Fouda died after Israeli troops fired on the car he was riding next to a military checkpoint in central Hebron, south of the West Bank.

Violence escalated last Thursday when an Israeli military operation in the Jenin refugee camp in the northern West Bank sparked fierce clashes that left ten Palestinians dead.

It was the deadliest confrontation in recent years in the West Bank, occupied by the Israelis since 1967.

Last Friday, an attack by a Palestinian civilian on a Jewish settlement in East Jerusalem killed seven people, the deadliest attack on Israelis in more than a decade.
