Glovo dismisses 250 workers but guarantees not to affect activity in Portugal

The home delivery company Glovo has announced on Monday the dismissal of 250 workers, about 6.5% of the workforce, in a decision that the management says is “necessary” and that it has no impact on activity in Portugal.

In a message sent to the workers and quoted by Efe, the president of the Glovo Board of Directors, Oscar Pierre, assures that these cuts “six months ago were not in the plans” and that they are inevitable for a good evolution of the company.

“We have tried to avoid layoffs at all costs, evaluating various scenarios, reducing costs and improving economic efficiency in the last nine months to pave the way for the future,” said the leader of the company that belongs to the German group Delivery Hero.

For now, the layoffs do not affect workers or have an impact on activity in Portugal.

“In Portugal, we will not have any impact and we do not foresee any interruption in our operations,” the company says in a note sent to Lusa, adding that its commitment remains “unchanged.”

Glovo’s statement adds that the decision has a great impact on the company’s headquarters in Barcelona.

“This decision has an impact mainly on our headquarters in Barcelona, in the areas of commercial support, recruitment and data. Only some local markets will be affected by this decision, with reductions limited to single digits,” the note reiterates, stressing that “no courier, picker, or front-line employee will be affected.”

Glovo also guarantees that the affected workers have already been informed.
