Pope Francis this Tuesday strongly criticized the “economic colonialism” unleashed in Africa and the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRCongo) on the first day of his visit to this African country.
“Hands off the Democratic Republic of Congo, hands off Africa! Stop suffocating Africa: it is not a mine to exploit nor a country to plunder”declared Pope Francis to applause before the authorities and the diplomatic corps at the presidential palace in Kinshasa.
Pope Francis arrived in Kinshasa this Tuesday, on the first leg of a seven-day journey that will also take him to South Sudan.
The 86-year-old Francisco’s 40th international trip, which is expected to be particularly challenging due to his mobility issues, was scheduled for July last year, but knee pain delayed it and since then the safety situation in the region has become more complicated in both countries.
