Lula and Bolsonaro dispute “third round” in the Senate

This Wednesday, Brazil elects the presidents of the Chamber of Deputies and the Federal Senate by secret ballot, until late at night in the National Congress.

And it is to the Senate that the center of attention turns, with Lula da Silva openly supporting the re-election of Rodrigo Pacheco, from the centrist PSD, and Jair Bolsonaro advising, directly from the United States, the vote for Rogério Marinho, his former minister. of Regional Development.

By first counts, Pacheco is the favorite, with 39 votes out of the 41 necessary for the election, already guaranteed. But, with 19 undecided voters and a tradition of last-minute double-crosses in this type of election, Marinho still has a say. Bolsonaro has already said that he wants to balance the powers of the nation from the Senate.

In the Chamber of Deputies, by contrast, the election is resolved before it begins, with Arthur Lira, current president of the Chamber, rallying support from the left, including Lula’s Workers’ Party, to the right, including the Bolsonaro’s Liberal Party.

Lira supported Bolsonaro, but since the election he has shown signs of getting closer to Lula, who prefers, as in the Senate, to “play for a draw” rather than risk his own candidacy and lose, since in October the right elected more parliamentarians. that left.

Lira, the powerful head of the deputies, enjoys great popularity in the house, especially after his salary, rent subsidy, fuel reimbursement and the number of free flights for deputies have increased in recent days – that is, his constituency.

Only Chico Alencar, from Psol, a kind of Brazilian Left Bloc, faces Lira, but with no chance of victory.
