Putin fires senior Russian Security Council official

Russian President Vladimir Putin fired the Deputy Secretary of the Security Council of Russia Yuri Averyanov on Wednesday over contractual issues. The dismissal took place during the Russian military offensive in Ukraine.

The senior official will now take on other roles in the Russian government, such as that of parliamentary adviser.

Putin signed a decree establishing the departure of Averyanov, aged 73, from his current position and stipulating that he will “take on other positions, including as an employee” of the Russian government, according to information published by the Russian news agency Interfaxen.

Averyanov took up the positions of deputy secretary of the vice president of the Russian Security Council and former president of the country Dmitry Medvedev.

Previously, Averyanov had held various positions in the Putin administration and worked as a professor in the Strategy Department of the Military Academy of the Russian Armed Forces.

The Security Council, made up of Russia’s top state officials and heads of defense and security services, with Putin himself as president, is the body in which the most urgent and important military decisions are taken.
