Russian President Vladimir Putin fired Russian Security Council Deputy Secretary Yuri Averyanov on Wednesday, citing contractual issues, the resignation came amid Russia’s military offensive in Ukraine.
The senior official will now serve in other roles in the Russian government, such as a parliamentary adviser.
Putin signed a decree determining the departure of Averyanov, 73, from his current position and stipulating that he will begin to “perform other functions, including as an employee” of the Russian government, according to information published by the Russian news agency. Interfax.
Averyanov assumed the functions of deputy secretary of the vice president of the Russian Security Council and former president of the country, Dmitri Medvedev.
Previously, Averyanov had held various positions in the Putin government, as well as working as a professor at the Strategy Department of the Military Academy of the Russian Armed Forces.
Composed of top state officials and the heads of Russia’s security and defense agencies, with Putin himself as president, the Security Council is the body in which all the most urgent and important military decisions are made.
