Lavrov criticizes Ursula von der Leyen’s trip to Kiev

The head of Russian diplomacy, Sergei Lavrov, this Thursday accused the “West” of supporting Ukraine to end what he called the “Russian question”, directly criticizing the visit of the president of the European Commission to Kiev.

Ursula von der Leyen “declared that the outcome of the war must be a Russian defeat, and such a defeat that it will not occur again for decades to come,” Lavrov said in an interview broadcast on Russian television.

“Isn’t this racism? Nazism? [isto não é uma] attempt to resolve the ‘Russian question’?” asked Russia’s head of diplomacy.

A total of 15 European Commissioners, including Vice-Presidents Margrethe Vestager and Valdis Dombrovskis, arrived in Kiev today.

The delegation is led by Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who will hold a series of meetings with the Ukrainian government.

For security reasons, information about the trip of the European Union delegation to Ukraine was not made public until this morning.

Serguei Lavrov also stated that sending Western weapons to Kiev will ensure that Russian troops maintain a presence in the country to keep Ukrainian troops away from the border area.

“If we try to move the artillery of the Armed Forces of Ukraine at this time to a distance that does not pose a threat to our territories, the greater the range of weapons that (will) send to the Kiev regime, the more there will be a commitment to remove Ukrainian soldiers from our borders,” he told the RIA Novosti agency and the Rossia-24 television channel. Russia’s chief of diplomacy added that the West is sinking into a quagmire “with every step it takes in Ukraine”.

“It will snowball,” Lavrov said, referring to the consequences – seen from Moscow – of the presence of foreign weapons that will be sent to Kiev.

Lavrov also said that Russia is at the center of a “geopolitical struggle” and that the Russian military personnel who are on the front line of the front “are heroes” committed to the future of humanity against the “total hegemony of the United States”.
