The President of the European Council, Charles Michel, assured this Friday that the European Union (EU) will support Ukraine’s accession at every moment of the process, the same day that it is in kyiv for a bilateral summit.
“Nothing will diminish our resolve. We will also support the way at all times [da Ucrânia] join the EU”, wrote Charles Michel on the social network Twitter, shortly before the start of the EU-Ukraine summit in kyiv.
Early in the morning, anti-aircraft sirens sounded throughout the country, when the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, greeted the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and Charles Michel, a protocol moment that precedes the start of the summit. .
The summit takes place at a time when Russia is intensifying the offensive, so the Heads of State and Government of the European Union did not travel to kyiv, as is usual in other summits, and are represented by von der Leyen, Michel and the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell.
The summit will essentially discuss two issues: Ukraine’s accession to the community bloc and financial and military support for the country.
Ukraine wants to join the EU (it has been a candidate country since last year) by 2026, but European leaders are likely to signal that it is impossible to meet that deadline. However, the EU is also expected to give clear signals about its intention to integrate kyiv, through inclusion in the EU Internal Market and in countries free of ‘roaming’ in telecommunications.
