Pope promises mediation in South Sudan’s civil war

Never before, like yesterday, at the farewell to the Democratic Republic of Congo, had a Pope repeating a slogan rhythm against corruption and war in that country. The shouts rose in tone, through the large crowd, mostly Catholic and who participated in the mass presided over by Pope Francis.

Everything indicates that the same could happen this weekend in South Sudan, the youngest country in the world, where corruption is the daily bread and civil war is the deadly air that is breathed there. The head of the Catholic Church, despite being limited in his health, did not stop going there, even at the risk of his life. For security reasons, he will not use the Popemobile on his trips. In an ecumenical gesture, he is in the country with the Anglican Primate of Canterbury and the Presbyterian leader of the Church of Scotland.

Civil conflict moderator?

It is already felt, in diplomatic and political circles, in Juba, the capital of South Sudan, that Pope Francis will be able to bring about, from his fifth trip to Africa, the moderation of the civil conflict between the president and the vice president of that African country.

The ethical and moral power of the head of the Catholic Church who came from Argentina is clear. But more than a direct concern for the evangelizing pastoral (not to be confused with proselytism), Pope Francis goes to the limit to exert his influence in the pacification of the peoples.

He said in the Democratic Republic of the Congo that enough is enough to steal Africa for the new colonizers and that it is up to young people to create a new face for their country.
