A 16-year-old girl died on Saturday after being bitten by a shark while swimming in a river in Western Australia, officials said.
The young woman was seriously injured when a shark, whose species has not been identified, bit her in the Swan River, near Fremantle, a Perth suburb, the government said in a statement.
It was pulled from the water and pronounced dead on the spot. There was a failed resuscitation attempt, said Paul Robinson, Fremantle District Police Inspector.
“What we’ve been told so far is that the victim was in the river with some friends,” Robinson said.
“It is possible that the group saw dolphins nearby and the young woman entered the water to swim close to the dolphins,” he added.
Robinson said the victim’s family was “absolutely devastated”.
Experts claim that it is not common to find sharks in that part of the river.
