He led the country from 2001 to 2008. Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf has died in Dubai at the age of 79 after a long illness, the army announced Sunday.
Senior military commanders “express their sincerest condolences on the death of General Pervez Musharraf,” according to a brief statement issued on Sunday by the army’s press service. “May Allah bless the soul of the deceased and give strength to the grieving family.”
Seven years in office
Following the aftermath, the media confirmed that the four-star general passed away this Sunday morning in a Dubai hospital.
“I can confirm that the late general breathed his last in Dubai this morning…he is gone,” a senior security official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
General Musharraf took over as head of Pakistan in 1999 in a non-violent coup after then-Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif tried to oust him as army chief.
In more than seven years in office, and he officially became president in 2001, he oversaw a period of economic growth while escaping at least three assassination attempts.
