Turkish police arrested this Sunday 15 suspected militants of the Islamic State terrorist group, who would have received orders to act against consulates of Western countries, present in Turkey, as well as Christian and Jewish institutions in Istanbul.
According to the Hürriyet newspaper, in its digital version, the suspects were arrested during a large operation in Istanbul and immediately sent to preventive detention.
Several consulates of Western countries such as the United States of America, Germany, France and Spain were closed in the middle of last week, as well as the French school in Istanbul, due to the possibility of terrorist attacks.
Western intelligence concerns intensified after a copy of the Koran was publicly burned outside the Turkish embassy in Stockholm the previous week.
Turkish authorities criticized Western partners for not sharing information with their intelligence services and spoke of “psychological warfare” to harm Turkey’s tourism interests.
