Protesters protest gender violence in Iraq after the death of a young woman

Dozens of Iraqi protesters demonstrated this Sunday to condemn the so-called “honor killing” of a 22-year-old YouTube star who was allegedly strangled to death by her father.

Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan announced on Friday that Tiba Ali was killed on January 31 in the city of Diwaniya by her father, who turned himself in to police.

According to the Associated Press (AP), there are reports that Tiba Ali’s father strangled her at night while she slept.

The so-called “honor killings” have been condemned by women’s rights groups and have raised alarm about the violence against women in Iraq and the need to reform the law to provide tougher sanctions for the perpetrators.

At this Sunday’s demonstration, there were people holding banners condemning the murder of the YouTube star and demanding legal reform, the AP reports.

“There is no honor in the crime of killing women,” one poster read.

“Anyone who wants to get rid of a woman accuses her of dishonoring her dignity and kills her,” That is what Israa al-Salman, a protester, told the AP, which also called for the execution of Ali’s father.

Article 41 of Iraq’s penal code allows men to “discipline” their wives, including beatings. Meanwhile, Section 409 reduces manslaughter sentences for men who kill or permanently harm their wives or female relatives as a result of adultery to a maximum of three years in prison.

Rosa al-Hamid, an activist from the civil society organization Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq, called on authorities to pass an anti-domestic violence bill, which has been stalled in the Iraqi parliament since 2019.

“Tiba was killed by her father with tribal justifications that are unacceptable,” he told the AP.

Aya Majzoub, Amnesty International’s deputy director for the Middle East and North Africa, said in a press statement that “violence against women and youth in Iraq will continue” until “the Iraqi authorities pass robust legislation” to protect “against gender violence”.

City officials and the hospital administration declined to comment on the young woman’s death.

Tiba Ali lives in Istanbul, Turkey, and has a YouTube channel with over 20,000 subscribers, where she documents life in the Turkish city with her Syrian boyfriend, a real estate investor.

In the first YouTube video, in November 2021, Ali said he moved to Turkey to further his studies, but chose to stay because he enjoyed living in that country.

The father reportedly disagreed with the move, nor plans to marry her boyfriend, with reports of a heated argument during the young woman’s visit to Iraq the day before her death.
