Italy’s internet service suffered interruptions this Sunday due to a “massive attack”, which will also have affected other European countries and North America, the origin of which is unknown, according to the National Agency for Cybersecurity.
Italian experts explained that it could be a “ransomware” attack and identified as the target VMware ESXi servers, which have shown some vulnerability in other similar incidents in the past, the Rai network reports.
The National Cybersecurity Agency has already inspected “dozens of systems” that may have been compromised and has requested updates “immediately” in the case of some servers that were “exposed” to the attack but could not be traced.
The “ransomware” method, often used by “hackers” and also used in this case, involves blocking the system on the premise that the user will be asked for money in exchange for his release.
