Earthquake off the coast of Turkey triggers a tsunami warning for the Italian coast

Italian civil protection issued a warning of possible tsunami waves on the coasts today after a strong magnitude 7.8 earthquake with epicenter between Turkey and Syria, according to the ANSA news agency.

The warning was issued based on data from the Tsunami Warning Center of Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology following the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck southern Turkey today, with countries at least 360 deaths.

In a statement, civil protection recommends the population to “move away from coastal areas and follow the instructions of the local authorities” in Italy.

Civil Protection informed the population and explained that the “tsunami consists of a series of sea waves caused by the rapid movement of a large body of water”.

The warning indicates the possibility of real danger to people close to the coast, especially in low-lying areas, or even below sea level.

The earthquake struck at 04:17 (01:17 in Lisbon), 33 kilometers from the capital of Gaziantep province, in southeastern Turkey, with its origin at a depth of 17.9 kilometers.

Minutes after the first quake, another 6.7-degree earthquake on the Richter scale was recorded at a depth of 9.9 kilometers, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).

According to correspondents from the France-Presse agency, the tremors were also felt in Lebanon and Cyprus.

Turkey is located in one of the most active seismic zones in the world.

Earthquakes are classified according to their magnitude as micro (less than 2.0), very small (2.0-2.9), minor (3.0-3.9), minor (4.0-4.9 ), moderate (5.0-5.9), strong (6.0-6.9). , major (7.0-7.9), important (8.0-8.9), exceptional (9.0-9.9), and extreme (greater than 10).
