The heartbreaking images bear witness to the shock and devastation affecting the region following the violent earthquakes that hit Turkey and Syria on Monday.
In this brief sequence broadcast by various US media including CNN, a father from the Aleppo region of Syria finds the lifeless body of his son among the rubble of a building that collapsed under the power of one of the registered tremors. Through tears, the man hugs the body of his son, dressed in a red coat. He is supported by various people who surround him and support him.
4,300 deaths already confirmed
During the night from Monday to Tuesday, rescuers worked hard, sometimes with bare hands and in inclement weather, to find possible survivors. According to CNN, still in Syria, a five-year-old boy was able to get out of the rubble alive.
In Hatay, in southern Turkey, a seven-year-old girl was dragged out of the ruins after more than 20 hours of terror, her pajamas stained with dust.
“Where is my mom?” she said to the rescuer who was holding her in his arms.
According to a latest interim report, more than 4,300 people have been killed, including 2,921 in Turkey and nearly 1,500 in Syria. The WHO, for its part, expects a final death toll of close to 20,000.
