The president of the European Commission called this Thursday for an appearance of Russian President Vladimir Putin before international justice for war crimes committed in Ukraine, in an interview with a German media.
“Putin must lose this war and answer for his actions, it is important to me,” Ursula von der Leyen told the daily Bild television channel.
There is no doubt that war crimes have been committed in Ukraine since the outbreak of the Russian offensive at the end of February, “that is why we support the collection of evidence” for a procedure before the World Criminal Court, added the head of the European executive , who visited kyiv during the day.
“Putin is responsible”
“The foundations of our international law system require that we prosecute such crimes and ultimately it is Putin who is responsible for them,” he added.
Asked about the likelihood that the Russian head of state could one day be brought to international justice, Ursula von der Leyen replied: “I think it is possible.”
Earlier in the day in the Ukrainian capital, the president of the European Commission had promised that the EU would support Ukraine “for as long as it takes” against Russia, as Ukrainian troops are gaining success.
