Monkeypox: first confirmed case in Ukraine

The Ukrainian Ministry of Health indicates on Facebook that an epidemiological investigation is underway after the confirmation of a case of monkeypox.

A first case of monkeypox was confirmed in Ukraine on Thursday in a hospitalized patient, the Health Ministry said. The patient is suffering from a fever and a rash, the ministry added on Facebook without further details. The infection was confirmed on Thursday by a PCR test.

An epidemiological investigation is being carried out, but according to the first data, the ministry said, the patient would have contracted the disease “in one of the big cities” of the country, hit since February by the invasion of its Russian neighbor.

More than 54,000 cases worldwide

According to the WHO dashboard that lists all confirmed cases, as of September 7 there were 54,709 cases and 18 deaths recorded in 125 countries, 98% of which are in Europe and North America.

Monkeypox starts with a high fever and quickly progresses to a rash. The disease usually clears up on its own after two to three weeks, but it can lead to serious complications, including bacterial infections.
