He wants to “finish the job”: Joe Biden, who plans to run again in 2024, will deliver a message to Congress this Tuesday of “political unity”, support for the “forgotten” of growth and confidence in American democracy, according to him “bruised ” but “preserved”.
“The history of the United States is a history of progress and resilience,” the US president will say, according to excerpts from his “State of the Union Address” released in advance by the White House.
Over this important annual general policy address, through which any US president fulfills his constitutional obligation to report to Congress, already looms the prospect of the 2024 presidential election. And, therefore, of a return match between Joe Biden, who is not officially in the race yet, and his predecessor Donald Trump.
Working for the “forgotten” of growth
Biden will ensure that American democracy, though “bruised” as demonstrated by the storming of the Capitol by supporters of Donald Trump on January 6, 2021, remains “preserved and inviolate.”
Facing the environmental slump, the 80-year-old Democrat, weighed down by his age and generally dire polls, still hopes to win Americans over to his economic project.
On Tuesday, he will promise to work for the “forgotten” of growth. “Too many people have been left behind or treated as if they were invisible,” the Democrat will say. The US president will call for higher taxes for the very rich and big corporations that coddle their shareholders.
The Democrat claims to be able to “finish the job,” fulfilling the promises that brought him to the White House: to heal the “soul” of the United States, “rebuild” the middle class, and “unify the country.”
One of the unknowns of the evening will be the behavior during the speech of the parliamentarians of the radical right, who have come to power during the term of Donald Trump, and whose figures, such as Marjorie Taylor Greene, now play a key role in Congress.
