Earthquakes in Turkey and Syria: the Pope calls for international solidarity

Pope Francis called this Wednesday for international solidarity with Turkey and Syria, two days after the terrible earthquakes, whose death toll now exceeds 9,500.

At the end of the general audience, which took place this Wednesday from the Vatican’s Paul VI room, the sovereign pontiff once again expressed his support for Turkey and Syria in the face of the tragedy that has cost the lives of at least 11,200 people according to the latest report. “I thank those who are committed to providing help and I encourage everyone to show solidarity with these lands, which have already been martyred by a long war,” said the Argentine Pope.

“With emotion I pray and express my condolences to these towns, to the families of the victims and to all those who suffer because of this devastating calamity,” he added.

The head of the Catholic Church sent his condolences to the two countries on Monday and said he was “deeply saddened” by the consequences of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake, which occurred early Monday morning.

In the freezing cold, rescuers are racing against time to save lives, and many countries have sent rescuers, equipment and food.
